TERROR IN THE SKY Russian ‘ISIS fanatic’ who ‘plotted to crash a US plane by flying a DRONE into it’ is arrested in Turkey

A SUSPECTED ISIS jihadi has been arrested in Turkey after allegedly plotting to down a US jet using a drone, police said today.

Turkish cops swooped to detain the Russian national who they say was planning the terror attack against US forces operating out of the Incirlik air base, which is used by Nato forces.

The US Air Force has used the base as a staging post for the air campaign against ISIS in Syria and Iraq since 2015.

Officers reportedly moved to arrest Renad Bakiev when surveillance showed him to be scouting the area ahead of his planned attack.

During his interrogation, cops said he admitted to surveying the base for the atrocity.

Bakiev also intended to attack the local Alevi community in Adana city, police alleged.

Alevis – who ISIS regards as heretics – belong to an offshoot of Shia Islam and are the largest religious group in Turkey after Sunnis.

The private Dogan news agency said the suspect allegedly defended the need to kill Alevis while being quizzed by cops, telling them he considered them “enemies of Allah”.

A statement from police claims Bakiev was affiliated with ISIS and had previously travelled to Syria.

He asked fellow militants on the Telegram messaging app, which ISIS sympathisers use widely, to give him more than £600 so he could buy a drone, police said.

ISIS militants have used armed drones to deadly effect in Iraq and Syria.

They have been known to convert commercial drones to carry small explosives and carry out attacks – using the tactic widely in the recent battle for Mosul.

Damien Spleeters, a field investigator for Conflict Armament Research, said in January: “It seems [ISIS] are using these weaponised drones to harass Iraqi troops, perhaps even target Iraqi forward operating bases where officers might gather, and gain attention by spreading terror in a seemingly innovative way.”
